January Sunset in the Columbia River Gorge.

We were blessed with many wonderful sunsets, and then that was followed up by a huge snowstorm that tied things up all over… then came a Silver Thaw that caused trees to break all over the area, pulling down many power lines with them, Many people in Klickitat County were without power from 1 to 6 or 7 days, with power crews working long days trying to get to the trouble spots and fix them.

My Five finalists in the Chasing the Light contest thru Pro Photo…

Previously I posted the 12 or so images I had narrowed the decision down to, and here are the final 5 I actually entered into the contest. I know many amazing photos were submitted to this contest and i will be thrilled if I even make it as one of the 40 finalists whose work will be displayed at the Columbia Art Museum in Hood River, Oregon.

Chasing the Light

I entered a photo contest today…. really the first one ever! For some reason that has been a step forward that has been hard for me, whether that is due to lack of confidence in my work or some personal mental issue with making changes. It took on an epic feeling, and I prepared for this for a month, contemplating and practicing. The process of choosing became an exercise in really looking at my work for this last year and finding my best images, gathering them together in one place, images of light, with unique qualities. Once I finally submitted my five images, I felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders, like I broke through a barrier holding me back!

Meanwhile, I am in the middle of a gallery show at Ten Speed North (our local coffee shop) in White Salmon, Washington; I have a SECOND gallery show lined up July 20 at the Inn of the White Salmon; AND a show in March at the local White Salmon Library!

Here for your viewing pleasure are 24 of the best images in a slideshow. Only 5 of these made the final cut for Chasing the Light photo contest.

Whether I actually win this contest or not, I have already won in my mind, by taking that step forward and entering. The rest is dessert…
I thank so many for helping me get to this point; my daughter for her help and encouragement and endless love; my adopted brother Larry and my friends Don Briggs and Jaap Cost Buddhe for their great encouragement and support; my friends and family and community for being amazed with me at the incredible moments of beauty all around us and actually believing in me enough to buy my books, calendars and cards and even large prints to make it all worth while

She Sings like a Nightingale!

My sweet Daughter Leannan Sidhe has been stretching her artistic wings in more ways than one the last few years. Last year she accomplished the recording of her first album of original music, as well as gotten her first published work, a short story in an anthology which can be found on the Fragile Dreams page. She also is an accomplished seamstress and created many of her own costumes. Leannan does beadwork, and is a lovely artist with pencil and watercolors as well, and can throw a great snowball to boot!

Now she is working on her second album of mostly original music, and the plan is to start recording this summer. You can hear samples of her music here

She is giving up her apartment and staying with me for awhile so she can put everything into this project. Here is where you come in! If you like to support young musicians and artists struggling to make it in this world, you can help through a website called Kickstarter which matches up people with projects with those who like to donate to such causes. I AM HAVING TROUBLE POSTING LINKS ON HERE BUT IF YOU CLICK ON HER LINK TO THE LEFT IN THE SIDEBAR YOU WILL FIND HER KICKSTARTER LINK THERE.

AFTER VIEWING, PLEASE CONSIDER A PLEDGE… SHE HAS 15 DAYS TO GATHER ANOTHER $1,005. THE WAY KICKSTARTER WORKS IS THAT IF THE GOAL IS NOT REACHED BY THE DEADLINE, THE ARTIST GETS NONE OF THE MONEY. NONE OF THE MONEY IS TAKEN FROM YOUR ACCOUNT UNTIL THE END OF THE PROJECT, AND THERE ARE MANY TIERS OF DONATION LEVELS WITH BONUS PRIZES YOU WILL RECEIVE AS WELL. I HAVE ALSO PROMISED TO SEND ONE OF MY PHOTO CARDS TO THANK ANYONE WHO DONATES AT LEAST $15 OR MORE, AND MY 8 X 10 IMAGES ARE SOME OF THE PRIZES.

Leannan has been working with James Alexander Adams, who not only does all the recording studio work, but also sings with her on a few songs and plays several instruments on the first album.

Magical Kingdom of Aurora

IN March I was blessed to be in the right place at the right time to capture 3 night time shots of the Aurora Borealis, with the full moon lighting up Mount Adams with a rare Lenticular Cloud formation over Trout Lake Natural Area Preserve in Washington State. These are single shots, not compilations… with standard editing using brighten/contrast and vibrance, a little saturaton but not much.

This image has become my new trademark, with card sales and large print sales,

You can find my images online in links to the left at Flickr, Google+ and Facebook, and contact me for more information on availability at starlisa.black@gmail.com

Spring is coming!

and tonight I feel more positive having a functional laptop again thanks to my nephew. This loaner is not only working great again, but now it is officially mine! Thank you to all who helped along the way to this point.
Eventually I do want to get a newer computer with warrenty and all that, and I also have really struggled to provide for myself while also sharing photos with the world on Flickr, Facebook and Google+ and our local TV weather. If you enjoy the photos I work hard to share and would like to help with even a few dollars, I have a donate button in the sidebar for paypal, or you could mail a donation to Darlisa Black, P.O. Box 190, Husum, WA 98623. I promise any money sent will be used to help me continue shooting this Pacific Northwest paradise… some of it will go for gas money to get out there shooting in different areas, some for SD cards as mine wear out, and other such expenses that enable me to bring you the photos.
Thank you!

Lenticular Cloud Formations

I updated my Lenticular gallery page with some moonlit shots from the same night as the Aurora shot. Come on over and see!

Lenticular Cloud Formations.

and then if you really enjoy my work, please consider putting a drop in my help bucket towards a new computer and processing program… my other one died, my income is way sub standard, and I am using a loaner thanks to my adopted brother. Thank you kindly for looking, and in advance for any support you can give for the beauty you see here. There is a donate button in the sidebar for paypal, or you can contact me at starlisa.black@gmail.com or at

Magical Kingdom of Aurora

Last night I got transported into a magical Kingdome of the Far Away land of Aurora where silence fills the void, but the silence is rich with the deep eternal song of the universe…
a land where frozen snow is on the shady side of lake where I am but not on the side I am shooting… a land where peaceful bird and elk sounds weave a lullaby, where coyotes yap their nightly song, where Elk swim the lake to get to the good grazing, and Loons sing their haunting melody… a land where the cold air smells fresh and nourishing, where a person can sit in the snow for hours watching the skies until 3:00 am and see no one and feel safe and at peace.

Magical colors filled the air briefly behind the Moonlit Mount Adams, and under the massive Lenticular Clouds that have lingered for hours. Streaks of rising Aurora stemming from an ancient Sun dance beside the regal Volcano

Breathe deep of the mystery, take it all in through your pores to feed the cells of your body and nourish your soul…

Yes, I saw the Aurora Borealis on a small scale behind the Lenticular clouds swimming over Trout Lake, Washington and I was thrilled as I lounged on a frozen snowbank after midnight waiting for a long exposure shot… BLISS I tell ya!

Midnight Lenticular with Mount Adams and Aurora

Highlights of Today

Today was sunny bright and warmer than previous days… and Lenticular clouds danced upon the Mountain.

Sunday Hat on Mount Hood

I came up with a new acronym today when life was weighing me down with sadness even on a sunny day…
M.E.A.W.
Mutual Encouragement Association of the World
MEAW Meow 🙂

Rock Iris in Spring

so, on that note I would like to encourage all who read this post that even on cloudy sad days there are people who care, people who will encourage you, and people with troubles far worse than your own!

I can also report that all the new books I had purchased have been sold, and I am about to order more. If you want to know more about that take a look at my link for two books for details, and for purchase info look on my facebook page for Starlisa Black Photography
